Wimbledon - Gasquet ready for Murray mania

Richard Gasquet might spend his day off on Sunday tracking down a pair of earplugs in Wimbledon Village in preparation for his tantalising fourth-round showdown with Andy Murray.

Bet on Tennis - Get £25 Free Three years ago the duo also clashed at the All England Club at the same stage and the one abiding memory Gasquet has of that encounter is the deafening roar that greeted every winning shot produced by Murray.

"I remember the crowd were very impressive. We're told all the time, the English, Wimbledon, it's quiet. But it was incredible. A lot people were cheering for him," the Frenchman recalled of the tussle which he ended up losing in five sets.

"I remember the third and the fourth and the fifth set it was very difficult for me to play, because there was a lot of noise."

If Gasquet thought the noise was unbearable three years ago, his eardrums might burst on Monday when 15,000 hollering fans on Centre Court, along will the rest of Britain, will be backing Murray to get one step closer to ending the home nation's 75-year wait for a men's champion.

World number four Murray, at least, has fond memories from their last grasscourt meeting as he fashioned one of his greatest comebacks from two-sets down.

"That was probably the first one that really was a big comeback from me," the Scot said recalling the 5-7 3-6 7-6 6-2 6-4 win.

"I think there was a lot of sort of interaction with the crowd. They really got behind me. It makes a big difference."

Since that win, Murray has shot up the rankings and contested three grand slam finals while Gasquet has failed to live up to his immense talent.

But despite the gulf that now separates the two contemporaries, Murray did not want to dismiss the threat posed by Gasquet, who has reached the last 16 without dropping a set.

Their contrasting styles should also be a feast for the purists, with Gasquet eyeing every opportunity to go on the attack and come into the net while Murray will be relying on his forehand to do damage.

"He's won all his matches pretty comfortably so far. He plays very well on grass. He's comfortable on the surface. It's going to be tough," said the British number one, who is locked at 2-2 in his head-to-head to Gasquet.

"He's obviously very, very talented. He's an excellent player. On his day, he can play great tennis."

Gasquet certainly can play great tennis because with a little bit of luck, he could have had a 4-0 record against Murray.

Apart from his setback in Wimbledon 2008, he also let a two-set lead slip in the French Open first round last year.

Those two blips have made him re-think his strategy.

"I've always played well against him. I also won the first two sets in Roland Garros, so I hope not to win the first two sets this time," grinned the 17th seed.

"It (the match here in 2008) was for me a good memory really, even if I lost. I played very well. I could have finished it in three sets. I had a break 5-4 but he fights a lot and I couldn't finish the match.

"On Monday, I have for sure nothing to lose."

smoking

for all the people that moan about the smokers we were the one that stood out side the bar all winter, may i suggest that you eat inside if you don't like the smoke, or where you in the winter when the bars needed trade not sitting out side i guess

La Marina

As we have a bar here on the Urb, I must say the smoking ban was a real worry for us. Seeing the problems it has caused in the UK with so many places closing down we were concerned as to the effects it may have on our business. Fortunately as the whether is good here most of the year......not to cold to sit outside, we have found that things have been fine for us. People knew the ban was coming into force and happily go outside to smoke.
I think if they were to bring in some crazy ban like not being able to smoke within 50 meters of the premises, then all the bar and restaurant owners here may as well close our doors now. As for wanting to attract more tourists o the area, I think you could forget that as well. I pray to god this never happens, because no business here means no work for me, so I would be another of the many who are having to pack up their things and head back to the UK.
Bye the way I am NOT a smoker.

SHORTAGE OF SNOOKER CLUBS

I am an avid Snooker player and find it extremely difficult to find many clubs around in and around the Rojales/Quesada/Torrevieja areas. I know there are a couple in Quesada, which we have tried and they are not bad, but they are not always opened on a sunday. So if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

SWIMMING POOL

Does anybody know if there are any open air swimming pools in Almoradi? what days and times they open. If there are any what do they charge to get in!
Thanks

Almoradi

There is the main sports centre just on the outskirts of Almoradi. It is opened 7 days a week from 9am - 9pm. There are 4 pools and a cafe area or you can take a picnic with you. Last year when my family used it it was 1 euro to get in, but I am not sure if it has gone up.
Directions - If walking go to the Almoradi football ground and there is a camino by the side of the ground, go straight down this road until you come to a main road, the sports centre is across this road and directly in front of you. If driving follow the road to El Saladar, when you come to the main junction/traffic lights turn right, you will come to round about take 2nd exit and this will take you into the sports centre. Hope this helps.

Thank you Almoradi Life,
We do have a small pool where we are renting but its like a plunge pool. Also we have family coming over during the summer holidays and wanted a larger pool. This sounds great and we will be using it probably most days. Cheers

Yeh I have used this open air pool on a few ocassions and it is always packed: Great facilities and you can easily spend the whole day there without realising. Recommended to anyone who wants a peaceful day out and to top up their sun tan.

There is also a community pool in Algorfa which is very close. It is large and very nice, worth a look. You will find it easy, if you drive thru traffic lights in Algorfa coming from Almoradi, up hill as if heading towards La Finca, there a number of yellow apartment blocks on the right, and you will find it near these.

You are absolutely right I forgot about that one. Thats quite nice as well, plus I noticed the other day they have 2 brand new paddle tennis courts, 1 normal court and a new football pitch. Algorfa seem to be spending money again on the community.

Shop Counter

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get a second-hand shop counter from. Schhhhhhhhhh its for the dog charity shop.

La Marina

I HAVE GOT A GREAT IDEA

Lets put a burning stick in my mouth and breath over 240 poisons into my body at the same time blowing out the smoke to do the same to anyone else that is near to me. What a great idea. I think I will teach my kids to do the same.

HOTTEST IN 60 YEARS

After the warmest spring since 1951 the Spanish met office predicts a hotter than usual summer. The first heatwave is expected to hit western Andalucia over the weekend

Torrevieja

I thought it seemed hotter than ever this year and this prooves it. We still love it and you just have to be careful not to be in the direct sunlight too long and have plenty of water on a regular basis.
